Slap Happy

I thought I would be teaching this project on our next month's quilt guild day and was in a bit of a panic because I got a call telling me it was the day after tomorrow and I had not made this bag before. I felt it behooved me to try the project ahead of the class so that I wouldn't come across as completely stupid about the project.

So, like an idiot , I grabbed the first pieces of fabric that looked sufficient and got down to work. It did not take long to make...not an overly intricate pattern. Matter of fact it makes a really nice tote bag. This top picture has the outside pocket with a disappearing nine patch (trimmed down to fit the pocket's proper size, of course) and the second picture has a disappearing four patch.

It closes on the sides with velcro...I just love all things velcroed....and then a flap folds over and is supposed to be closed with a button.

I will put a button on it...once I find my trusty button box...but I think I will cheat a little and add some more velcro..I've got lots and why not, eh???

The other thing I did, that the pattern did not call for was add batting to the sides. The actual pattern calls for heavier fabric than cotton and since I couldn't get to the store to buy some cordouroy, duck, canvas or denim...I wanted to have something a little more stable...sooo....batting works.

I took a picture of the inside of the bag so you could see all the neat pockets inside...all kinds of room for quilty gadgets, or water bottles or cell phones or whatever.

The pattern is called " A Bonny Bag" and the original pattern calls for a pieced house pattern for the outside pockets...that was a little more involved than I think a morning class would provide time for.

Now the interesting thing is, it actually is next month's project and I could have taken my sweet time and made a really pretty bag...even could have done the house thingy... Oh well, at least I am prepared...sort of.

In the meantime, I'm not really crazy about the bag...so we are having a Chinese Auction this week...a great way to get rid of UFO's you'll probably never get around to doing...guess what my contribution is going to be.

Well as you said you are organised for next month!.. and the unwanted bag will still be put to good use. So it's a WiN WiN situation really!
